pepsi natural.

Pretty much the first Pepsi I’ve had in years. Sold at very few [select?] outlets in the US {I picked mine up at Target} and not featured prominently even on Pepsi’s own website, this is a remarkably soft launch for a pretty significant product – and quite a departure from the Pepsi RAW campaign in the UK [there’s an image from the UK campaign in this post, which shows that when in doubt, or just plain out of ideas, use the old standby – the ever versatile and alluring female form].

Pepsi Cola sold in some parts of the word has used sugar as a sweetener, but this is the first official use of sugar to sweeten a major brand of cola, without any trace of corn syrup, high fructose or otherwise, in the US. The homegrown cola at Whole Foods uses sugar, but it is a limited reach / limited distribution product.

This is a thoroughly mass market product taking a cue from the more natural approach of organic foods, down to the color and feel of the packaging. It might be just a short term branding and marketing strategy, in which case this trend will soon pass, but it does little harm to know that the move towards simpler foods with fewer ingredients is no longer un-noticed.

The cola tastes good – I think it has mild apple undertones and a less harsh carbonation. The smoother fizz and milder flavor makes for quite a tasty drink. There’s a comparison with regular Pepsi over at keacher.

I do not drink enough cola to be a certified cola aficionado, but I like this. If your tastes lean towards intelligentsia and peet’s vs. starbucks, I think you’ll like it too. Did I mention the bottles are glass?
